A view of how education should really be like.
Our educational system is hopelessly out of date and needs the right people to reform it. I’m a teacher and have worked at the chalk-face for over 33 years. In that time I have been listening, thinking, observing and adapting, evolving and revising my practices. A teacher spends time in the field, you couldn’t get anyone that knows more about what works and what doesn’t, how children tick and how they learn. At the same time as trying to enlighten and prepare them for life outside the protective home and school environment, as a pseudo-parent, the teacher also has to deal with their social and emotional problems.
Remember the riots. What do you call a riot police officer without a helmet or shield during the daytime. A person who only has a wagging finger and a look that can strip paint to keep order?
– A teacher.
And yet, who really takes the opinion of the teacher seriously! Untrusted by government. Ridiculed by the Tory press. Inspected wholly by people who left the profession, invariably due to incompetence to advance their own financial situation.
The exam results/ league tables driven system is educationally and ethically bankrupt. Anyone who believes in the way we are going or helps to maintain this disgraceful and ignoble excuse for an education system should be ashamed of themselves.
I want no part of it. I feel like a dead man walking.
